The non-return valve allows free flow from the directional valve (2) to pressure (1) while a direct, pilot-operated discharge valve controls the flow from 1 to 2. The pilot (3) lowers the effective setting of the discharge valve to a value determined by the piloting ratio. The back pressure at 2 does not affect the valve setting because the spring chamber has atmospheric reference.
